Praia da Salema littoral cliffs are of special interest because layers from Lower Cretaceous- Barremian contain dinosaur trackways. Noteworthy are the bipedal tridactyl Iguanodontid tracks exposed in the western sector of the cliffs that prove the presence of large herbivores during the Lower Cretaceous in the Algarve region. Sedimentation occurred during the Barremian in a lagoonal environment in this area which evolutes to openly marine one, as observable throughout the sedimentological and biofacies variation in the cliffs. In addition, several structures, which exemplify the Cretaceous tectonically extensive regime as well as the discontinuity between the Lower Cretaceous and Upper Jurassic, can also be observed.
